Since the Middle Ages the name Solingen has appeared on the blades of epees and swords. It is a well-known fact that forges and grinding shops, using the water power from the rivers for their trades, existed in the Ruhr valley and secondary valleys centuries ago already.
Solingen blades were always synonymous for quality. Blades carrying the stamp "me fecit Solingen" went out all over the world.

Efforts to protect the name "Solingen" against abuse are also hundreds of years old.

The so-called "Solingen Regulation" decrees that the name Solingen may only be used for such cutting tools that

• have been produced with all essential production processes taking place within the Solingen industrial area
• are suitable for its specific use according to the raw material and craftsmanship used to produce it
